Tranquil countryside including Sherwood Forest Great Oak, Sherwood Forest

Nottinghamshire is home to miles and miles of unspoilt green countryside including hills, woodlands and rivers.  Everyone recognises Nottinghamshire as Robin Hood Country, and if you want to discover one of the best known places for the legend of Robin Hood and his Merry Men, you will want to visit Sherwood Forest.  Sherwood Forest with its canopy of trees and footpaths is a joy to explore.  Don’t miss the Major Oak; a hollow oak tree that Robin Hood was supposed to have concealed himself in!

Nowadays there is a purpose built visitor centre in Sherwood Forest with an exhibition, tea room and gift shop.   It's still an excellent place for walks with several well maintained trails.  The aerial assault course company, 'Go Ape', has opened a centre in the forest for those who like a little excitement in their lives.

Historical Attractions in NottinghamshireNottingham Castle

One of Nottinghamshire’s most famous historical attractions has to be Nottingham Castle with its history dating back to 1068.  Visit to discover the museums, the legend of Robin Hood, the extensive grounds and caves.

Other historical attractions in Nottinghamshire include Newstead Abbey with its extensive grounds, Clumber Park, Rufford Park, and Wollaton Park in Nottingham.  All have rich history, visitor attractions, walks, toilets and restaurants.

Southwell to the west of Newark-on-Trent has two major visitor attractions on offer; the National Trust workhouse and infirmary, with audio tours, that bring to life the miserable existence of those destitute souls forced to rely on the workhouse, and of course Southwell Minster with its famous chapter house and carvings.

City of Nottingham
